Unit 21 Hundreds of riddles. Be a bit selective (it might be a good idea to choose some of the riddles that use past simple forms) as some will be culture bound and some will take some explaining. Divide some of the riddles up between groups; get them to think about possible solutions and then, after a while give them the answer. Mix up the groups and exchange riddles. Unit
Festivals from around the world. Ask your students to look for festivals from their countries and get them to give a mini presentation. Alternatively search for holidays in the English speaking world. See how they react to Guy Fawkes Day or indeed Morris Men. Unit
Send your students shopping. Hundreds of clothes links. Find a couple of suitable ones before class, one with lots of pictures preferably. Get students to choose some new clothes (print off the pictures) then get the other students to say what the clothes say about their character. Unit
Arrange your class into groups and ask them to arrange a class/group outing - use this website to see whats available. During the discussion phase encourage language of 'making suggestions' however, during the feedback stage make sure that they are clear on their decisions and encourage the use of going to. Unit
Huge wealth of links to foody type pages from around the world. Ask your students to look for their favourite style of food or food from their country and to make notes on the basic ingredients. After comparing this with others in the class the activity could be extended to creating a typical menu for the students country. Unit
The above site is only an example; there are thousands, if not millions, of others you could use. Either: set the students the task of buying a present for a friend or somebody from the class (who this person is should be made quite clear). They should then explain the reasoning behind their choice. Or role-play a customer shop assistant situation. The customer outlines what they are looking for and the money they want to spend; it is the job of the shop assistant to make suggestions. Unit
Type in any common ailment and it will come back with symptoms, causes and ways to alleviate the symptoms, all in very manageable chunks even for elementary students. Why not produce a wall display of symptoms of and cures for the common old, headaches, flu Unit
Use these sites to compare cities. Ask students to look up two cities, maybe their capital city and an equivalent British city (e.g. Marseilles and Manchester). Ask them to make notes on the main points of each place and then to make a list of similarities and differences. Unit
Use the site to find information about the Olympics. Use it as an introduction to the unit. Before the lesson you could set them ten questions, the answers to which they will find somewhere on the site. Make this a timed exercise to encourage them to scan the text for the information. |
