Unit 31 Lots of information and tips for budget travellers. Why not look for some tips and ask your students to write some of them down along with an explanation e.g. On trains always try to sleep with your backpack in case anybody tries to steal it. Theres also a link to www.globalbum.com - a tongue in cheek list of advice for budget travellers. Unit
32 The home of complaints, people with all sorts of problems with things or services they have bought. Several letters asking for help and a very handy guide (in short very manageable chunks) telling you how you should buy a TV or whatever. Elicit some experiences students have had and ask them to write a letter of complaint. Alternatively ask them to imagine they are one of the customers and ask them to write to the company involved. Unit
33 Learn all sorts of interesting hints and tips, for example how can you make lipstick last longer? How can you stop powder paint sticking to a toddler? Answers are all in this site. Students could be asked to look at some of the tips and then report back using the clauses of purpose practised in Unit 11. Alternatively try http://catalog.com/impulse/invent.htm. Ask students to choose an invention, print a picture or write down the name and ask other students to guess the use. Could be extended to include their views. Unit
34 Do a simple search on any search engine for "ecotourism" and there will be thousands of tour operators. Above are just three randomly chosen examples. Put your students into groups, give them a budget and ask them to organise a trip, during feedback make sure they explain their choices and exactly how their trip is eco-friendly. Unit
36 Brainstorm some common teenage problems e.g. problems with parents, fighting for more freedom Then ask your students to go to this site and read through some of the letters and ask them to choose their favourite and to tell the class about it. Put the class into groups and ask them to suggest some solutions to the problem and maybe write a letter with the advice. Unit
37 This is a quotation
ring which essentially acts as a search engine for famous quotes.
Use it to search for notable quotations or dumb quotations and there should
be some good examples e.g. "For NASA, space is still a high priority." Get the class to find their favourite and to discuss what the speaker should have said, and what this quote tells you about the speaker. Unit
39 Choose any search engine: www.yahoo.co.uk
or www.altavista.com
are particularly good for this exercise, which is a kind of grammar safari.
