Unit 1 This is a search results page from About.com. Here you will find a whole host of links to games, activities, and reference material for native speaker children. First unit of a new book, your students will probably need some revision of basic terminology. Use this site to refresh their memories. Give them a list of parts of speech some basic others more complicated and ask them to find a site and examples for each. Hopefully they should be able to do most from memory but just in case they can refer to the links. Unit
2 This extensive site offers etiquette advice for business travellers. Students could be asked to brainstorm and research the customs of their own countries and to think about what foreign visitors may find confusing when visiting. Unit
3 These sites could be used when discussing sports and national sports will also help to set the scene for the description of a sporting event. Unit
4 Plan a short break in a city of your choice or plan a short break in your city for one of your friends. Simply type the address of the destination. Then choose the best places to go, things to see, where to eat, what to avoid and give any advice you can about money, the weather Role-play customer/travel agent, or give a presentation about your city. Unit
5 Choose several famous people, prepare some simple questions about them: e.g. when was s/he born? Why is s/he famous? And ask students to find the answers as quickly as possible. Students could then be asked to prepare their own questions for the rest of the class. Unit
6 Very short fiction (2-2000) words choose one or two examples and decide what could have happened to the speaker eg "I can forgive, but I'll never---ever!---forget why? What happened to make the speaker feels like that? Unit
7 Choose a country/area/city that you know (Maybe where you live or where youre studying and using the dry factual information see how you can make it sound more interesting/attractive, similar to the piece at the start of Unit 7. Alternatively compare the information in capitals.com with that in rough guides. Look for words that describe personal opinion and words that are purely factual. Unit
9 Lots of interesting links visit the earliest memory exhibition and read the first memory of visitors, use this as a starter to encourage the class to remember their own first memories/first memories of school. Unit
10 Explore some of the strange laws from other countries , maybe try to find one or two laws from your own country and tell others why you think these laws exist. If they dont sound dumb to you see what others in your class think. For example why will unattended baggage be exploded in the UK? You can also encourage the students to visit the discussion and post their own opinions on the laws. Alternatively print some of the cartoons and ask the class to guess what the "dumb Law" might be. |
